Creative Curriculum for Preschool
For children ages 3 – 5 years old The Creative Curriculum is a play based curriculum that revolves around active learning and open-ended exploration. Classrooms are arranged and divided into interest areas, such as block building, dramatic play, art, library, toys and games, sensory play and discovery. Each area is filled with developmentally appropriate materials that children can use in creative play and discovery. Children will learn from watching other children, asking questions and exploring on their own. Children learn best when they are active so while they are busy doing their work (play) they will be growing in each area of development - social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language. The fine motor skills your child builds in their hands and arms while playing in the sand will be needed later when they are trying to squeeze a scissors or hold a pencil firmly to write their name.
Teachers establish a consistent daily schedule so the children know what to expect at different times of the day and what is expected of them. Besides time spent in the interest areas of the classroom, there will be times that children will meet as a large group and in small groups to participate in teacher led activities. During large group time the children will meet to talk about the plan for their day, listen to stories and be involved in music and movement activities. During the course of the day the teacher will also have a chance to interact and observe children in small groups during interest area time as well as gather small groups of children to work on planned activities and projects.
